The new Solace Grove. A full sim waiting to be explored.

A touch of mystery envelopes the grounds near the cairn hill and stone circle. Paths leading in and out of tall grass and trees. Quiet places tucked here and there to let one find a place of solitude and rest. Across the quiet waters lies Solace Cove. A beach front formed at the base of a lonely mountain. The sounds of music liven the spirits of those that visit and stay to play in its sands and waters.

These grounds are open to adults to visit and look around. Stop in and stay awhile… you might be surprised at what you find. Set your draw distance to 200+ for the best visual experience, and IM Alexis Mensing or Hawk Perenti for help, or a group invite. Thanks for coming and come back soon!

I really like sims like this that invite you to relax and explore, just to be quiet and enjoy.

Six Years …

It was my sixth Rez Day last Sunday. All month I’ve been seeing these notices on my Librarians of Second Life group:

image

“Rainbow Gardens wishes you a Happy Valentine’s Day. Please come by and enjoy our Valentine decorations which will be up until the end of the month along with our dance bed. Our Valentine Teddy Bear tip jar and gift giver has been moved to the entrance of the gardens. He is ready to give you a sweet treat or some flowers. Thanks again for your support.”

image

“What:  A cocktail party celebrating Mystery Manor before the end of “Feb. when  it’s home site on Info Island goes away
“When:  Sat., Feb. 16, 5pm SLT
“Where:  Mystery Manor”

image

“Please join us to say a fond farewell to 7 years of Info island!  CVL is moving to Imagination Island next week and Info will fade away when the Lindens see fit.  Thank you all for your support through the years! We are looking forward to new fun in a new location :) Derry is DJing and we’re gonna party as only we can!”

How sad! Seven years and still going strong if their events calendar is any meaure but for lack of financial support, they are about to lose one of only three remaining sims of what once was 55 sims!

I could get fairly maudlin here. Firefly’s tavern has closed down. I’m afraid Quandry Industries and Black Bishop Innovations disappeared shortly after I wrote about them! However, Booty Bay Smuggler’s Haven has made a call to Firefly regulars to join them on Storyville sim.

It’s pretty amazing to look back. I just posted a link to a fifty-minute Designing Worlds video about Splintered Rock that goes beyond the meager pictures I’ve posted about a place where my love of SL was ignited. I also noticed that the main space station above Araxes looks like a BBI installation.

Two groups going in opposite directions, it would seem but I would urge you to check that InfoIsland calendar every once in awhile and check out the readings and the presentations that will continue beyond the end of this month. Those librarians are pretty amazing.

*******

I look back over the past year and see my boobs appearing more often than in the previous four years of blogging. Part of it is the FuckYeahItsTumblr attitude that seems to rub off, and part of it is a  revolution appears to be going on in Second Life in how we present our tatas. The old system boobs have been with us for nearly ten years. The biggest innovation that LL has given us in all that time is how to make them bounce better. No small thing. And I have to say, despite my measured satisfaction with my mesh breasts, the bounce I’ve gotten used to—particularly using the Devicious physics, which were included in last fall’s offerings—is nothing to let go of lightly. But you must if you go with this new trend. BTW, there are new mesh breasts coming from other designers. I fear I may go broke!

It’s more than just boobies, however. I’ve written about mesh avatars, petites, and mesh heads during the past year. It looks like the mesh head business is starting to pick up speed with Redgrave beginning to show off animated faces and the amazing Snow Rabbit project by Shirousagi Noel. Another blog I’ve added to my iGoogle page is The Digital Pasture by Penny Patton, who designs avatars and has much to say about mesh and designing in SL.

Despite all the doomsaying, the closings, the indifference of the Lab, from what I’ve seen in those blog postings and videos, the future still looks exciting and I’ll do my best to keep focused on it.

Araxes | Treet TV

This is the absolute best way to learn about Splintered Rock, a 49-minute interview with Vooper Werribee (Darren Green) and Reiko Soyinka. This Designing Worlds series of videos by Prim Perfect is wonderful! It includes some Firefly sims and explains how things can blend together. If you’re not into the history, fast forward to the 12:40 mark and watch them take the shuttle down to the surface.

While we’re on the subject, it was another one of those bittersweet moments for me to learn that Firefly’s, the pub celebrating the beloved TV series, celebrated it’s sixth anniversary on it’s last night of business! There is hope, however, as Shanghai’s in another sim is asking the Firefly folks to check them out.

Edelfabrik Revisited

A funny thing happened on my way to One Billion Rising on Valentine’s Day. I got a message from Edelfabrik about a grand party where they were giving away a new Enticer outfit and $L250 gift certificates. How can a girl possibly pass this offer up? And so I went and I have the pix to prove it:

image

image

Another feature of the evening was the attempt at the highest output from a Sploder (they were shooting for $L21K). While some people were getting 300-700, I got my 20 back, twice. I think they went for the record after I left.

Last spring I was all over Sarah91 Tremor’s Edelfabrik, particularly her Shoecraft footwear. My fervor has cooled down a bit since then, but I keep track of things via notices. For instance, she’s collaborated with sWEET HAIRs to offer variations on one of my favorite hairstyles, Selene, along with Trustyle shapes and eyes. (BTW, a great sWEET HAIRs sale is going on, so check it out.) Selene has been Sarah91’s choice of hair on most of the ad textures I’ve ever seen, so this Trustyle alliance was inevitable.

image

So here I am posing in my own uni-color Selene hair (pink seemed appropriate though I also have fire red and red), wearing the Lascivious-Dreamer ($L499 mesh) outfit in blue in front of the vendors for outfits and hair offered at Edelfabrik. (Aren’t the Attentionizer shoes to die for?) A great deal!

The Trustyle hair comes with a menu/hud for handling on/off and colors for bobbypins, hairband, and barretts, all for $L399. Also available with headphones and beret is Natalie, shown in picture below, in front of one of three Enticer sets of mesh outfits. I’m wearing the Enticer set given away that night. (Love the shoes!!)

image

image

JulieStudent copy/mod shape show below, comes in Edelfabrik’s unique EF Gold size that is unique to mesh offerings by Edelfabrik, guaranteed to fit. If you can’t read the fine print, it says that none of the clothes, hair, or skin with tan lines is included in the $L699 price.

image

As mentioned, I love Shoecraft, and could not pass up the debut deal (now over) on Dinos (ala Crocs in first life), shown above from two angles. Be sure to join the group to get in on introductory prices, which are often 30% off or better. Even at full price, they’re worth it, and use your group member discount if nothing else.

One last thing to note: I was having trouble getting that gift certificate I won to work and as directed in the readme notecard, I copied the error message and sent it off to Sarah91 Tremor. Within 12 hours, she had sent me the item I was trying to buy. That’s good customer service!

Files Day in Second Life

In a recent post I joined the trendy idea that LL charging for excess inventory was worthwhile, if it helped them manage the changing business model required for keeping Second Life viable. Apparently objections have arisen that seem compelling at first. I would agree that for people who are creating and selling products, any limitation to their inventory or added cost could be the last straw. Our inventories, as suggested in the article, are definitely reasons for which we feel obliged to stay in SL, to be sure, but I think the matter goes deeper than that.

I would suggest that the inventory surcharge only be applicable to people with free accounts. Even those of us who have been here for years and built up a fair-sized inventory must admit that a great deal of it is never used! Add to the fact that if one did searches on variations of Open Box scripts and such, duplicate landmarks, and any number of notecards announcing last years Hair Fair, one could easily get his or her inventory to within striking distance of a reasonable inventory cap.

Here’s a Nyte n Day Grace outfit in Jade that I got as a present. Other than sentimental value, why keep it? We throw out clothing in first life—granted, virtual clothes don’t wear out but mayb they do wear out their welcome. The Blooberry Hope hair sure has!

Personally, I have a vast number of clothing items and other paraphernalia that I will never ever wear again. I am certain that every one of us is that way. Let’s consider what the argument being put forth is really saying: if our inventories are what binds us to SL, what if we were given the opportunity to leave and take it all with us. Certainly, the lazy side of me would be willing to just chuck it all together and depart. But like any move from one home to another in first life, I think we—unless you are a hopeless hoarder—would take stock of what’s worth taking and what’s worth leaving behind, and do some winnowing.

I’ve pondered my relatively modest inventory—I’ve mentioned my totals at various times and been greeted with “meh!”—and asked myself “why am I not content with wearing the same outfit/hair/skin/etc.?” Why am I constantly buying new things? And I am not fooling myself that I am doing this because I can write about it in this blog. That’s utter nonsense! There was a time when I was given a handsome honorarium for contributing to a certain blog and I could justify the expenditures, but that time is long past and I continue to buy things like a drunken sailor. That is at least part of why I continue to show up in Second Life. So, yes, if I were given the choice of a monthly fee for retaining a certain amount of items in my inventory, 30% of which could very well have been free as gifts or hunt items, or dropping items, which would have to include items for which I did pay, I think I’d be glad to start with that 30% and go from there. Not that I begrudge the Lindens an opportunity the cash as much as I would still be opening up space on their servers and lessening their expenses.

Here’s one of my all-time favorite outfits from four years ago, the Pearl collection from Kaosome. Great combinations here, the jacket is transparent and has a tunic style shirt layer as well as this underwear layer at left.. The Jennifer hairstyle from CS on the left and right hand pix is still worth hanging on to, but I know there are hair packages that I’ve never worn and will never wear … why is it so hard to let ‘em go?

This is a viable solution, folks, as long as the inventory cap is reasonable and doesn’t extend to people who already pay premiums. Yes, a majority of long-time, free-account folks do contribute to the SL economy in our purchases, but I also don’t see an inventory cap as putting a noticeable chill on our continued consumption. Perhaps I would think twice about a purchase in terms of what gets tossed to make room, but if I haven’t worn some outfit in three years, it’s time to clean out the closet anyway.

I could see people getting together for what amounts to what we in first life call File Day at work. A time to clear out unnecessary files. People can take screen shots of their inventory totals and have a contest as to whom can delete the bigger percentage of items.

I was writing in Serendipidy’s blog a few weeks ago how SL population numbers really shouldn’t be compared to social network numbers. It’s still more of a game than a social network. And yet it’s not completely comparable to World of Warcraft and such because most of us play for free. That so many of us are still playing is a testament to the nature of the game, which is a mix of many things: business, design, art, sex, dolls (dress up), and roleplaying, among other things. If WoW didn’t do some kind of major upgrade after 18 months or so, very likely people would move on because it has its limitations in playability, but SL is limited more by one’s imagination than the tools, despite their age and lack of sophistication when compared with the tools used in WoW. (However, let’s keep in mind who gets to use those tools!)

In her response to my comment, Seren gave me an epiphany that I would like to share and conclude this little meditation with:

“However, just as in the real world, priorities change, interests wax and wane and focus alters over time – personally, i think this is healthy and a necessary part of life, and by association, any inter-related virtual life, or lives, that we may choose to pursue.”

Of course, one of the most compelling reasons most of us stay in SL has nothing to do with our inventories save for the Calling Cards that represent the people we know. When we grow really close to our virtual friends, there’s a reality that we don’t often consider very deeply in first life: we are not long for this virtual world. We will inevitably be called away from SL and all-too-often our friends have faded away without any sense of closure. We learn to live with this. It’s a valuable lesson to carry into our first lives because the rules are very nearly the same.

When I consider how much money I’ve spent in this virtual world, perhaps the price of these real life lessons is worth every penny.

You can’t take it with you.

It’s been a long time since I last wrote about Stellar. Lexi is taking on mesh and Lolas Tango apps with her usual sassy sense of style. The Lolas will be on my Lolas Tango Outfit of the Week (Baseball shirt $L135) page tomorrow but I thought I’d make a call out to some recent discoveries:

In the United States, the past year has been one privileged white male after another tripping over his tongue with bad logic about whether a woman has the right to make fundamental decisions regarding her own body. We’ve read of horrifying incidents of violence against women (rapes in India and Mexico, most prominently, and just in, a mentally incapacitated woman whose rape has been deemed consensual) and religious justifications for silencing women from Islamic tribal groups to the Catholic Church. One Billion Rising is holding up a megaphone and letting us have a dancing rant fest about taking women seriously.

Violence against women is not just the physical, which is the worst and lowest form, no question about it. The verbal abuse is psychological and damages as deeply as any physical blow. But what we need to realize is that these politicians and religious leaders who voice justifications for placing women on a second tier of importance lay the foundation for continued violence. Until these people can be brought to realize just how their speeches invite violence, we will never be safe.

I have a dear friend who told me the other night that racism is over, that people who are complaining about it are in some kind of reverse racism backlash. I looked him dead in the eye and told him to pull his head out of his ass! The complete breakdown of Congress in its irrational attitude toward anything our African American president suggests is grounded in racism, nothing else accounts for it. Not only is racism still befouling our national community, but sexism is still walking roughshod throughout our “enlightened” nation. It’s much worse in other parts of the world.

My friend is living is some kind of bubble and One Billion Rising is an attempt to pop that bubble.

Bring your safety pins! Let’s pop some bubbles!
